How Do I Grow My Business’s Presence on Twitter?

You’ve heard about Twitter but you may be wondering what it can do for your business. If you’re looking to grow your brand’s presence and increase your community online, both of which will help you offline in your business, then you need to get the conversation stared now, don’t wait!

There are a few things about Twitter to know before you get started. First, it’s important to stay authentic to your brand voice. Talk in a way that is consistent with your business. Second, people on Twitter are smart, so don’t try to sell yourself, talk to them and provide them with value. The sales will come but first you need to build trust and a stable relationship. Third, mix up your scheduled vs. real-time Twitter efforts for the most effective strategy. If you rely solely on pre-schedule messages through outlets like HubSpot or Hootsuite, your followers will sense that you’re not really interested and engaged in conversations. It takes a combination of pre-vetted, scheduled ideas and topics and a daily willingness to monitor Twitter to really grow your presence.

Bearing in mind those important aspects of how Twitter works, here are 50 different ideas of what to Tweet about to get the conversations going and your presence growing.

1. Lists. Spend a couple of hours writing out 50 tips you wish you’d known before starting your business, then release them over the course of 5 weeks in a 5 part installment. Repeat with a new topic when the five weeks are up.

2. Quote the Author: when you find a great piece of content online to share, don’t just tag the publication, tag the author. They’re highly likely to RT and expose your business to their audience.

3. Photographs: people respond to photos, whether their illustrated quotes you create or photos from around the office, great photos and illustrations are always popular.

4. Weekly Recommendation: have a specific day where an employee or yourself suggests a movie/book/TV show/album that they’re enjoying. Be consistent!

5. Acknowledge Failings: retweet and respond publicly to any negative Tweets to ensure your community you take complaints seriously. Be polite! And offer to take the conversation off Twitter to resolve their needs.

6. Live Events: tweet from any live educational talks or presentations at events you attend.

7. Topics: Participate in a Twitter discussion pertaining to your industry with relevant contributions and commentary.

8. Stand-up: consider taking a stance on something that aligns with your company’s philosophy.

9. Relevant Industry News: just be sure to add your own personalized commentary alongside it.

11. Podcasts: any informative, funny or industry related podcasts that you find value in you’re Twitter community will likely enjoy as well. Be sure to tell them why you’re recommending it, too!

12. Human Interest: find human-interest stories that pertain to people touched by something your industry provides and share it.

13. Closures: if you’re business is going to be closed for an event, holiday or other scheduled outage, let your community online know about the offline event.

14. Testimonials: if someone says something great about your company, retweet it and thank them for their support and kind words.

15. Challenges: discuss some of the hardships your business faced. Tweet about how you solved these hardships as inspiration to others.

16. Spread the Love: when others in your industry achieve success, RT their accomplishments. You don’t have to promote your competition but find topics and achievements of companies that influence or effect your industry and RT the love.

17. Opinions: Ask your audience to share their opinions with you en masse, hashtag accordingly and feature their suggestions in a blog post or by retweeting.

18. Proselytize: Search around for the rockstars of social media within your industry. Suggest to your community why you follow them and why they should, too.

19. Q&A: hold live Q&A sessions on Twitter to take questions and answers to common questions in your industry. If you can’t get question on a live Q&A seek out topics that you can answer and offer your unsolicited best advice to others to make new connections.

20. Celebrate: announce milestones that your company has achieved without telling your customers to buy anything.

21. Local Guide: share local hot spots for eating and other fun activities and be sure to tag your local area.

22. Apps: Twitter and smartphones go hand-in-hand, people will love a new app that keeps them productive

23. Thought-Leaders: find inspiring, thought-leader based Twitter accounts and recommend them to your followers. Tell your community why you follow them.

24. Global: if your business is global or even bi-coastal, talk about the regions, cities and local area news of the communities your business spans.

25. Upcoming Events: if you or a member of your team is going to attend an important event, volunteer gathering, etc. be sure to announce and tweet about it. Ask people to attend and support the causes you’re involved in.

26. Video: YouTube and Vimeo are great sources for funny, entertaining and even informative free video on any topic you can imagine so mine that content for videos you can share on Twitter to your community.

27. Recommendations: suggest products or tools you use that help support you, your staff and your business. The manufacturer of the product will appreciate the shout out and your solution could help someone in your community.

28. Pinterest: if you’re looking for great quotes but don’t want to create them yourself or just type out quote text, Pinterest has a great collection of beautifully designed quotes you can link to and share on Twitter.

29. Habits: what daily habit did you pick up that changed how you think? Tweet about it.

30. Tell Your Story: what’s your company’s story? Tell it through a series of tweets, and then publish the tweets to your blog.

31. Financial Calendar: tax time and quarter ends are a great change to keep your followers abreast of important dates means they’ll grow to trust your information.

32. TED Talks: explain why they’re awesome, and inspire your followers to respond with their own suggestions.

33. Seasonal: tailor your content to the season. If it’s summer, an article about fun ways to beat the heat might be great. Winter? How about a buying guide for holidays?

34. Local Hero: pick an inspirational person from your industry, take questions from your community, and interview them either on Twitter or through your blog.

35. Webinar: attending a great webinar? If it’s public and free, spread the word! Maybe your followers would attend too and the event organizer is sure to appreciate the free press about their webinar.

36. Holiday Wishes: there’s a lot of regular and uncommon holidays around the world, share and discuss them with your followers.

37. Share Staff: if your employees are comfortable with it, share their Twitter profiles with the broader community by touting their achievements or accomplishments. It puts a nice personalized touch on your business by showcasing your employees

38. Trending Topics: check out the trending topics hashtags on Twitter and see if there are ways for you to organically discuss or offer commentary on what’s happening in real time.

39. Blog Posts: does your company have a blog? Share recent, new and past posts with your Twitter audience to provide them with great content and your business with additional eyes on your site.

40. Humor Them: when you come across something funny on Twitter, feel free to add your commentary and retweet to your audience, it’s okay to have a sense of humor!
